Saint Efstathios was a great martyr saint of the early Church. Born in Rome with the given name Plakidas, he rose to become an illustrious general during the reign of Emperor Trajan (53–117 A.D.). One day, while out hunting, Plakidas experienced a life-changing miracle: he encountered a majestic white stag with the Cross of Christ between its antlers, soon accompanied by the voice of the Lord Himself addressing the astounded Roman general. What followed was the conversion of Plakidas and his family to the Orthodox Church and a life of deep, unwavering faith and eventual martyrdom.
