St. Moses of Ethiopia Doll

from $5.00

St. Moses of Ethiopia (known as St. Moses the Black) was born around the year 325 AD. As a young man he often used violence to get what he wanted and wandered Ethiopia and Egypt for many years robbing and hurting others with his band of robbers. In this way, he grew to be very strong and clever. One day, he was running from trouble and took refuge at a monastery. St. Moses began to hear about the love of God and the forgiveness that He offers His children. He begged the abbot to be allowed to stay and become a monk. After much prayer and obedience, he was tonsured a monk and lived in a small cell.

One of the most cherished stories from the life of St. Moses comes from a time when he was asked to attend a meeting about a fellow monk who had been sinning. He reluctantly went, carrying over his shoulder a bag of sand with a hole in it. The sand leaked out of the bag the whole way from his cell to the place where the monks were meeting. His Elders asked what he was doing, and he told them that the sand in the bag is like our sins, which leak out and follow us all the time. If we only pay attention to the sins of our brother, we ignore the trail of our own sins behind us. After this, the monks decided that the meeting was not necessary anymore.

May we strive to imitate the strength, discipline, and humility of this amazing saint.

We commemorate St. Moses on August 28 (NC) and September 10 (OC).
