The Protecting Veil of the Theotokos
The Protecting Veil of the Theotokos
Celebrated on Oct 1st, the feast of the Protection of the Theotokos is a celebration of the generous love of the Mother of God that she shows to us especially in times of need.
On this day, we especially remember the protection that the Theotokos offered to Blachernon in Constantinople around the year 900 AD. Once, some barbaric tribes threatened to invade the city and the people there gathered in the church where her mantle (or belt/sash) was kept to pray to the Theotokos that she would ask God to help them.
It is said that St. Andrew the Fool-For-Christ and others there saw a vision of the Theotokos with her mantle stretched over the city, as she tearfully interceded on their behalf. The attack of the raiders failed and the people gave thanks to God and the Theotokos.
This feast day is celebrated on Oct 1st (NC/Slavic Parishes,) Oct 28th (NC/Greek Parishes,) and Oct 14th (OC.)
Most Holy Theotokos, pray to God for us!
